How does a sludge dewatering filter press work?

  1. Closing the Press: First, use the hydraulic system to close the filter press. Press the filter plates tightly together so that a sealed chamber is formed.
  2. Feeding Sludge: Next, pump sludge into the press through the central feed point. As the sludge fills the chambers between the filter plates, the pressure gradually builds up.
  3. Filtration Process: Apply pressure to force the liquid (filtrate) through the filter cloth, leaving the solids (cake) behind. Collect the filtrate in troughs and drain it away.
  4. Cake Formation: As the filtration keeps going, a layer of solid material, the cake, forms on the filter cloth. The cake gets thicker and thicker until it fills the entire chamber.
  5. Drying Phase: After the filtration stage, you can maintain the pressure or increase it a bit to further dry the cake and remove the extra moisture.
  6. Opening the Press: Once the filtration and drying stages are over, use the hydraulic system to release the pressure and open the filter press.

The filter press is highly versatile and can effectively handle nearly all types of sludge:

  1. Hydrophilic Organic Sludge: To make the sludge cake release easily and keep it from sticking to the filter cloth, it’s best to use inorganic conditioning.
  2. Hydrophilic Inorganic Sludge: Usually, when using a filter press to process this sludge, all you need to do is add lime.
  3. Hydrophobic Inorganic Sludge: This thick sludge works great with the filter press. You can remove water from it without doing any prep work beforehand.
  4. Oily Sludge: The filter press can handle sludge with light oils, but grease can sometimes mess up how it works. So, you have to clean the filter cloth regularly to get rid of the grease and keep it working well.
